Call for PaFF Competition Organiser

Our young fencers love their PaFFs: It is a full day of fencing amongst friends and friends-to-make. They like the challenge to fight fencers they have never fought before, as well as competing against their club mates in an official, refereed fight. They live the team spirit in the hall, they cheer their friends and motivate each other after a lost fight. And sure enough they love to bring home a medal or trophy!

Please help keeping the PaFF competitions running!

We are looking for someone to organise next school year’s PaFF competitions. Ideally you join us in running the upcoming PaFF 22 competition on the 12th of May, then take over organising PaFF 23 in November 2018.

Organising a PaFF is not rocket science: There are a couple of hours of admin duty with some emails to be send, a trip to the Awards Shop to buy new medals & trophies, and a shop for tuck drinks & sweets.
We provide an electronic as well as paper-based folder with to-do-lists, draft emails, Excel sheets, PDFs etc. Everything is ready to take over! Please contact Anja, paff.anja@gmail.com, if you have any questions or would like to help - even for just one competition.

It is only two more weeks to the next 22nd PaFF funLeague day for Primary School-aged fencers in Edinburgh and further afield. 

12th of May 2018, at the Napier University's Sighthill Campus, in the [EN]Gage Centre for Sport and Fitness.
11am Check-In, Warm-up and Fencing from 11.15am to 4pm, Awards ceremony 4.30pm, Finish 5pm.

New PaFF 22 on the 12th of May

Due to the spell of heavy snow we faced in Edinburgh during the first week of March, the 22nd PaFF funLeague day scheduled for the 3rd of March was cancelled. The sports hall was closed, there was too much snow to get to the hall anyway, and the fencing kits we would have needed were locked in at closed primary schools and community halls.
We felt sorry for all those fencers who had been looking forward to a lot of fencing, but a day out sledging surely was as much fun, wasn't it?

The new 22nd PaFF funLeague day is taking place on the 12th of May, at the Edinburgh Napier University's Sighthill Campus, in the [EN]Gage Centre for Sport and Fitness. The set up is the same as for the cancelled March competition: Check-in at 11am, Warm Up and Fencing from 11.15am to 4pm, Award Ceremony at 4.30pm, Finish at 5pm.

General competition information: 

This competition is open to all young fencers in primary schools across Scotland. It is especially suitable for fencers who have just started. The equipment is provided, but bring your own mask, if you prefer.

What to expect: A lot of fencing and fun! 

Meet fencers from other clubs and fence all day, with a final round against children of your own ability level. Each final division of 6 fencers fights for its own trophy and medals.

There will be experienced referees, a play area for younger brothers & sisters and for between rounds and bouts, and a tuck shop with snacks, coffee, and tea for parents. 

During the first two rounds all children fence in mixed levels across the participating schools and clubs. In the final round, the fencers are grouped together into League Divisions A, B, C, etc of very similar ability. There are no elimination rounds - everyone gets a full afternoon's fencing. Each final division of 6 fencers fights for its own trophy and medals with certificates for the following places.

The referees also award our largest trophy, the Bracewell Trophy for Form And Technique, with medals for the runners-up, and a gold medal for Sportsmanship.

We will be using our paperless scoring app, with an extra app for all fencers and spectators to follow their scores as the action happens. Simply click  PaFFAudience. Frequently asked questions:

"What should we bring?"

• A long sleeved top and long trousers, which allow full movement of the leg & knee;
• A warm top, for between fights;
• Grippy, clean indoor shoes that have heel-cushioning;
• A water bottle, lunch and snacks – your child will need lots of food during their hours of fighting;

You might want to bring your own camping chair. The competition takes place in a sports hall with limited seating for spectators. So bring your own camping chair or make yourself comfy on the floor.

"Isn’t it a bit early for my child to enter a competition?"

Honestly, No.

Many of the children are equally early in their progress as a fencer, some only had three lessons. This competition gives them four hours of fencing against children roughly their age, and a chance to compete in a final round against carefully-selected opponents, with coaching on the go by the referees. 

"Do we need to stay?"

If you can, please do stay to support your child. And a helping hand is always welcomed by the organisers, as this competition is completely volunteer run.

Results of the 21st PaFF competition

The 21^st PaFF funLeague Day was held on the 11^th November 2017 at the [EN]GAGE Sports and Fitness Centre of the Napier University Sighthill Campus in Edinburgh.

Thirty fencers from eight fencing clubs and seven primary schools in Edinburgh fought in over two hundred fights with plastic foils.

Newcomers with only a few weeks of fencing lessons as well as experienced fencers with four or more years of training showed great fencing skills and sportsmanship fighting for trophies and medals in five divisions.

Division A: Joseph S. won fourteen out of his fifteen fights and became first in division A, followed by Katharine D., Findlay C., Archie P., Harold P., and Robert L., all fencers from Bruntsfield Primary School. While Joseph, Archie, Harold and Robert are fencing within the after school club Fencing is Fun Bruntsfield, Katharine and Findlay – also former FiF Bruntsfield attendees – have moved on to metal foil fencing with the Edinburgh Fencing Club.

Division B: The first place went to Stephen H. (Bruntsfield PS, Salle Holyrood), silver went to Aleks R. (Fencing Fun - Craiglockhart Primary School), bronze was won by Lachlan C. (FiF Bruntsfield PS). Follow up places went to Merryn U. K. (Fencing Fun Towerbank PS), Kasper W. (FiF Bruntsfield PS), and Joshua L. (Fencing Fun Towerbank PS).

Division C: Marco S. from George Heriot’s Fencing Club came first, Hector N. (FiF North Merchiston, Bruntsfield PS) placed second, and the third place went to Thomas O’S. (FiF St. Peter’s RC PS). Philip D. (FiF Bruntsfield PS), Anna McG. (FiF North Merchiston, Bonaly PS), and Ewan H. (FiF Bruntsfield PS) came fourth, fifth and sixth.

Division D: Emily McG. (FiF North Merchiston, Bonaly PS) placed first in Division D. The silver medal went to Santiago L. (George Heriot’s Fencing Club), bronze was won by Rory J. (Fencing Fun Towerbank PS). Fourth came Jimmy H. (FiF St. Peter’s RC PS), fifth Billy B. (TNP Gaelic School, Edinburgh Fencing Club), and sixth Luke B. (FiF St. Peter’s RC PS).

Division E: First placed Henry W. followed by Matthew H., both FiF Bruntsfield PS. Third came Joshua O’N., followed by Leo H. fourth, and Jacob C. fifth, all FiF St. Peter’s RC PS. The sixth place went to Michalis K. (FiF Bruntsfield PS).

The trophies for Best School and Best Club were won by Bruntsfield Primary School and FiF Bruntsfield – for the fourth consecutive year.

The Bruntsfield fencers also won the gold medals for Best Boys of their school years: Michalis K. (P2), Philip D. (P3), Harold P. (P4), Joseph S. (P5), Stephen H. (P6), and Findlay C. (P7).

The gold medals for Best P4 Girl went to Anna McG., Best P5 Girls was Merryn U. K., Best P6 Girl was Emily McG., and Best P7 Girl was Katharine D.

Special Awards went to Rory J. for the Best Sportsmanship, and Aleks R. was the highest placed Newcomer.

The most prestigious price, the Bracewell Trophy for Form and Technique was awarded to Emily McG. The silver medal for Form and Technique went to Katharine D., and bronze was awarded to Joshua L.
